As you probably know, the ollie is the foundation for a lot of tricks. It’s basically a necessity to master this one. Basically, it is just popping the skateboard into the air. Sounds pretty simple right? Unfortunately it can take some people a while to learn.

At first, you might want to learn while stationary to make it a little easier. Bear in mind that it can be quite a bit different when stationary, and you may develop bad habits. You can also practice on grass if you are worried that you are going to end up eating the concrete.

You want to place the back foot so that the ball of your foot is on the tail. If you don’t know which should be your front foot, figure out your stance first. Your front foot should be positioned halfway between the middle of the board and the front trucks. At least, this should be your starting point and you may find that slight variations work better for you. Your front foot should also be straight across the board.

Before you jump, bend your knees quite a bit, and slam your back foot down into the tail. Simultaneously, jump into the air using your back foot. Then squickly snap that foot back into the air while rolling your front foot forward, dragging it towards the front of the board.

Pull both your knees into the air, keeping your body as level as possible (don’t worry, this comes with practice). Level out the board mid air, land, remembering to bend your knees, and roll away.

It all well and good to just read this, but without practice you aren’t going to get anywhere. So get out there!
